Sinhawansa Mahmoud Subandrio or better known as DJ Subandrio was crowned PALME DJ of the Year 2009 at the annual competition held at PALME Middle East at Dubai’s International Exhibition Center.
DJ Subandrio fought off more than 30 professional DJs from across the region to take the coveted crown in a thrilling 15 minute live performance that had the judges and the packed audience in awe.
The judges selected 6 contestants from the semi finals to take part in the finals, they were each given 15 minutes instead of the normal 10 minutes to show the judges just how good their mixing skills are. They were; DJ Chami, DJ Subandrio, DJ Mowgli, DJ Kabbi, DJ Josh, and DJ Kirk. The first runner up was DJ Kirk and the 2nd runner up was from Saudi Arabia, DJ Mowgli.
Each of the 6 finalists were handed a set of Pioneer HDJ-2000’s, the latest Headphones released by Pioneer. The 2nd runner up walked away with a Pioneer DJM-800 and the 1st runner up received a set of Pioneer CDJ-400’s as well as the 60GB Pacemaker. DJ Subandrio received not only the title of PALME DJ of the Year 2009 but also a set of Pioneer DVJ-1000’s, a 120GB Pacemaker and a headline spot at a Gorgeous Dubai event.
“The caliber of this year’s DJ’s was far higher than the previous 4 competitions and for once I was glad that I was the organizer and not one of the judges” commented Manager and organizer of the DJ competition, Angelique Botes.
All contestants were judged on four main criteria: technical, creativity, stage presence and pitch control. In the technical section, DJ’s had to demonstrate their mixing skills on both the Pioneer decks as well as the Techniques turn tables. Self-confidence and showmanship is part of being a top DJ therefore the judges was not just looking at the DJ’s themselves but also at the crowds response.
The judging panel comprised of, Greg Dufton, best known for his role as event organizer at Chi @ the Lodge; Tammy Tinawi, Director of Gorgeous Dubai; Jamal Sirhi, Managing Director of DesertBeat Trading; Anirban Bhattacharya, Product Specialist of Pro DJ Equipment for Pioneer Gulf; DJ Brute Force Pioneer’s DJ from India and DJ Mo Tiger, winner of the 2007 PALME DJ Competition.
“Based on this year’s success the 2010 event will be bigger, better and a fiercer battle” said Angelique Botes. So get your decks ready and start preparing for the 2010 competition, see you next year from 18 to 20 April, same time same place.
